Belize Digital Nomad Visa: Eligibility, Costs and Application Guide
Belize markets an official remote-work route under the name Work Where You Vacation. Travelers often call it the Belize digital nomad visa, but the safest description is the tourism board’s remote-work program rather than a separate visa class: Belize Immigration’s public permit pages do not currently list a permit with that exact name. This guide explains what the official pages say, what they do not say, and how to prepare without confusing the program with an ordinary visitor extension.
Checked 17 October 2026: program rules and charges can change. Confirm the current checklist with Belize Immigration and the Belize Tourism Board before paying for flights, insurance or document services.

Is there really a Belize digital nomad visa?
There is a current official program, but terminology matters. The Belize Tourism Board publishes Work Where You Vacation as a remote-work program and provides eligibility, documents, fees and an application path. Belize Immigration separately publishes visitor permits and extensions, including a warning that an ordinary visitor permit does not authorize paid or unpaid employment, business or professional activity without the Director of Immigration’s consent.
That distinction is important. Do not assume that entering as a tourist and buying visitor extensions creates the same permission as applying through the remote-work program. Keep the program approval with your travel documents and use the contact details on the official page if your work arrangement does not fit the simple employee-abroad scenario.
Who appears eligible?
The official tourism-board checklist is concise. It asks for proof that you are employed outside Belize and sets annual income thresholds of US75, 000foranindividualandUS100,000 for a couple or family. The program is designed for people whose economic activity remains abroad while they stay in Belize.
The public page does not provide a comprehensive list of eligible nationalities, a detailed definition of self-employment, or a separate threshold for each accompanying adult. If you are a contractor, company owner, freelancer with several clients, or dependent partner who also works, ask Belize Immigration for written confirmation before applying. Do not infer eligibility from the absence of a restriction on the tourism page.
Documents in the official checklist
Prepare readable, current copies of the following:
- A valid passport.
- Proof of employment outside Belize.
- Evidence that you meet the published annual income threshold.
- A notarized banking reference and statement.
- A criminal-record certificate issued no more than six months earlier.
- Travel insurance providing at least US$50,000 of coverage.
- Supporting family documents where relevant, such as evidence of the relationship and children’s records, if Immigration requests them.
The official page does not specify acceptable document languages, apostille or legalization rules, minimum passport validity beyond “valid,” or the exact bank-statement period. Those are the kinds of details to confirm directly rather than copying assumptions from an unofficial visa blog.
Application process
1. Check the official program page
Start with the Belize Tourism Board’s Work Where You Vacation page. It is the clearest public statement of the program’s checklist, income levels, insurance requirement and fees.
2. Assemble the evidence
Request the criminal-record certificate early enough that it will still be within the six-month limit when you apply. Arrange the notarized banking reference and confirm that employment and income documents clearly identify the foreign employer, applicant and currency.
3. Apply through Immigration
The tourism-board page directs applicants to complete an online application with the Belize Immigration Department. Use the Belize Immigration Services Portal or the application link provided by the tourism board; do not pay an intermediary simply because it appears above the official result in search.
4. Wait for approval before relying on the program
The public page does not promise a processing time. Keep accommodation and flights flexible until you have written approval and understand any instructions attached to it.
5. Travel with the documents and pay the fee on arrival
The official steps say to travel with the relevant documents and pay the program fee at the airport. Carry the approval in both digital and printed form, plus the insurance certificate and evidence used in the application.
Costs to budget for
The published government charges are BZ500peradultandBZ200 per child under 18. That is not the full relocation budget. Allow separately for the criminal-record certificate, notarization, document delivery, compliant insurance, flights, accommodation deposits, mobile service and local transport.
The official page does not publish a renewal fee or promise that a 180-day stay can be extended under the program. Belize Immigration’s ordinary visitor extension is a separate product: its page currently describes 30-day extensions at BZ$200 and repeats the restriction on working or conducting business without consent. Treat that route as different unless Immigration tells you otherwise in writing.
Can a family apply?
The program is presented as family-friendly. The official page publishes a family income threshold, a fee for children under 18 and a waiver of student-permit fees for children. However, it does not spell out every custody, consent, school-enrollment or dependent-document requirement.
Parents should contact both Immigration and the intended school before traveling. Ask which birth certificates, consent letters, vaccination or academic records are needed and whether documents require notarization or legalization.
Work, tax and compliance cautions
The program page is not tax advice and does not create a blanket promise about tax residency, social-security obligations or permanent establishment. Those questions depend on facts including nationality, residence, time spent in Belize, business structure, employer location and treaty position.
Remote workers should also distinguish overseas work from serving Belizean clients or entering the local labor market. The public program description focuses on employment outside Belize. If you plan to invoice a Belize business, hire locally, trade through a Belize entity or provide services on the ground, ask Immigration and a qualified adviser which authorization applies.
Where to live in Belize
Belize offers very different bases. Belize City has the broadest urban services but is not the country’s main beach destination. San Pedro and Caye Caulker put island life first, with higher dependence on ferries, carts and tourism pricing. Placencia and Hopkins combine coast access with a smaller-town rhythm, while San Ignacio suits travelers who prioritize inland trips and a lower-key base.
Internet quality can vary by property even within the same town. Before signing a longer lease, request a recent speed test from the exact unit, ask whether the connection is private or shared, and confirm backup options during power or provider outages. Our Caye Caulker digital nomad guide covers one of the most popular island choices.
Before you apply: practical checklist
- Verify the program is still open on official Belize pages.
- Confirm your work type and nationality are accepted.
- Check that income evidence matches the published threshold and clearly states currency.
- Order the criminal-record certificate with the six-month limit in mind.
- Obtain the notarized banking reference and statement.
- Buy insurance only after confirming the required wording and US$50,000 minimum.
- Ask about family documents and school requirements where relevant.
- Keep bookings flexible until written approval arrives.
- Carry approval and supporting documents when entering Belize.
- Retain proof of the fee paid at the airport.

Bottom line
Belize’s official Work Where You Vacation program offers a relatively simple published proposition: up to 180 days, overseas employment, stated income thresholds, a short document checklist and transparent per-person fees. The gaps are equally important. Nationality, contractor and detailed family questions are not fully explained on the public page, so confirm edge cases directly and do not substitute an ordinary visitor extension for program approval.
