Best Toiletry Bags for Carry-On and Long-Term Travel

Specifications and US prices were checked on October 5, 2026. This is a manufacturer-spec comparison, not a hands-on test. Prices, colors and stock can change.

The best toiletry bag is the one that fits your actual kit without becoming a second suitcase. For long-term carry-on travel, four variables matter most: how liquids are separated for security, whether the bag hangs or stands, how easily spills can be cleaned and whether the shape fits full-length items such as an electric toothbrush.

Quick picks

  1. Peak Design Small Wash Pouch — best balanced organizer. Structured, upright and pocketed, with a hanging loop and a compact footprint.
  2. Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Hanging Toiletry Bag Small — best lightweight hanging option. An 80 g organizer with mesh storage and a detachable mirror.
  3. Matador FlatPak Zipper Toiletry Case — best for ultralight leak resistance. A flexible 2.3 L case with welded construction and a sealing zipper.
  4. Bellroy Toiletry Kit Plus — best for a larger grooming setup. A broad, organized pouch for travelers who carry more than minimalist travel sizes.

Published dimensions are not directly comparable to usable capacity because structured pockets, gussets and soft sides behave differently. Measure the longest rigid item you carry and compare the packed shape, not only the liters.

Carry-on liquid rules come first

For US airport screening, the Transportation Security Administration allows one quart-size bag of liquids, aerosols and gels, with each container limited to 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters. A normal fabric toiletry bag does not replace that clear liquids bag.

Pack liquids so the security bag can be removed without unpacking the rest of your grooming kit. After screening, you can place the clear bag inside the toiletry organizer if it fits. Rules and screening technology differ by country and airport, so check the departure airport rather than assuming TSA rules apply everywhere.

How we compared the bags

This comparison uses only current manufacturer pages and published specifications. We did not score durability from personal use. Instead, we assessed:

  • liquid-security workflow;
  • published dimensions, volume and weight;
  • hanging or standing design;
  • pocket layout and long-item fit;
  • material and spill-containment claims;
  • warranty and current price.

“Best for” means the published design fits that use case; it is not a laboratory result.

Peak Design Small Wash Pouch: best balanced organizer

Peak Design’s Small Wash Pouch is the most conventional all-rounder in this comparison. The official product page showed a US price of $49.95 on October 5, 2026. It is designed to sit upright when open and separates long items such as a toothbrush or razor from smaller toiletries. A hanging loop adds flexibility in bathrooms with little counter space.

Choose it if you want visible organization and a structured shape. Skip it if your priority is the lowest possible weight or a fully leakproof container. The organizer itself is also not the clear quart bag required for US carry-on liquids.

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Hanging Toiletry Bag Small: best lightweight hanger

Sea to Summit lists the small Ultra-Sil Hanging Toiletry Bag at $49.95, 2 × 9 × 3 inches and 2.8 ounces / 80 g. The 30D siliconized high-tenacity Cordura nylon is water-resistant, while internal zippered mesh pockets help separate small items. A shatterproof detachable mirror is included.

This is the strongest choice when you expect tiny sinks, shared bathrooms or hooks instead of counter space. Sea to Summit says the fabric can contain ordinary spills, but the seams and zippers are not waterproof. Treat that as water resistance, not submersion protection.

The manufacturer says the small size meets a 1 L / 1 quart guideline, but a fabric organizer may still not satisfy an airport’s requirement for a clear resealable liquids bag. Keep a separate compliant bag unless the screening authority explicitly says otherwise.

Matador FlatPak Zipper Toiletry Case: best ultralight spill barrier

Matador lists the FlatPak Zipper Toiletry Case at $20, with a 2.3 L volume, 9 × 3 × 6.5 inch dimensions and 1.1 ounce / 32 g weight. It uses PFAS-free 70D ripstop nylon, welded construction and a sealing zipper.

The soft body compresses as the kit shrinks, which is useful in a tightly packed backpack. Matador’s Dry-Through technology is designed to let water vapor escape while blocking liquid water. The company calls the case highly water- and leak-resistant, not fully waterproof.

Choose it for low weight and simple containment. Skip it if you want many internal dividers or a deployed hanging organizer. The loop can suspend the case, but it does not open into a multi-panel bathroom cabinet.

Bellroy Toiletry Kit Plus: best for a larger kit

Bellroy’s Toiletry Kit Plus measures 5.1 × 9.8 × 3.9 inches according to the current official page. Its wide shape and internal organization suit full grooming routines better than ultralight one-bag setups.

The trade-off is volume. A large soft pouch is easy to overfill, and liquids still need their own compliant security bag. Check the current regional price, material variant and warranty at checkout because Bellroy localizes its storefront.

Choose the Plus when you carry electric grooming tools, several containers or a shared couple’s kit. For a strict carry-on-only setup, measure the packed pouch against the space left after laptop, clothes and shoes.

Cleanability and leak control

No organizer eliminates the need to close bottles carefully. Put leak-prone containers in small resealable bags, avoid filling bottles to the rim and wipe threads before tightening caps.

For cleaning, follow the manufacturer instructions. Water-resistant nylon can usually be spot-cleaned more easily than leather-trimmed or heavily structured designs, but waterproofing claims vary. Matador explicitly describes welded seams and a sealing zipper; Sea to Summit says its fabric is water-resistant but the zippers and seams are not waterproof.

What actually fits?

Before buying, place your normal kit on a table and divide it into:

  • security liquids;
  • dry toiletries;
  • medicines that need separate handling;
  • long rigid items;
  • electrical items and charging cables.

Measure the longest rigid item first. A nominally larger bag can fit poorly if the toothbrush pocket is too short, while a flexible pouch can adapt to odd shapes but offer less organization.

For long-term travel, do not automatically carry full-size bottles. Decant what you use, buy common products at the destination and keep prescription items in their original labeled packaging when required.

Best choice by travel style

Minimalist one-bag traveler

Choose the Matador FlatPak Zipper Case if weight and flexible packing matter most. Pair it with a separate clear liquids bag.

Traveler using shared bathrooms

Choose the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Small for a true hanging layout, light weight and a mirror.

Organized general traveler

Choose the Peak Design Small Wash Pouch for upright access and divided storage.

Larger grooming setup

Choose the Bellroy Toiletry Kit Plus if space and organization matter more than minimum weight.

What we would not claim

We have not personally stress-tested zippers, submerged these bags or ranked their long-term durability. Manufacturer warranties and material claims are useful evidence, but they do not replace inspection after purchase. Check the return policy before removing tags.

Final verdict

For most long-term carry-on travelers, the Peak Design Small Wash Pouch offers the clearest balance of structure and organization. The Sea to Summit is the better hanging choice, the Matador is the lightest and most compressible option, and the Bellroy Plus is for larger kits.

Whichever you choose, treat the clear liquids bag as a separate security tool. See our Europe packing list and packing cube comparison for the rest of the carry-on system.

Frequently asked questions

Does a toiletry bag need to be clear for TSA?

The liquids bag must follow the TSA quart-size and container limits. Your dry-toiletry organizer can be opaque, but it does not replace the compliant liquids bag.

Is a hanging bag better?

It is better in bathrooms with limited counter space. A standing pouch can be faster when you have a stable sink or desk.

Is leak-resistant the same as waterproof?

No. Matador distinguishes its zipper case from its fully waterproof roll-top model, while Sea to Summit says its seams and zippers are not waterproof.
