Apply for the Arctic Digital Nomads Grant and Spend This Winter in Scandinavia

In a groundbreaking move to breathe new life into rural Arctic communities, Geiranger, one of Norway’s charming fjord-side villages, is offering an unforgettable winter escape to digital nomads worldwide. Known for its breathtaking landscapes, Geiranger is now opening its doors for the winter season through the Arctic Digital Nomads Grant. This innovative program, in partnership with Thingeyri in Iceland and Vágur in the Faroe Islands, offers remote workers free housing and workspaces, and invites them to experience a unique Arctic winter while helping to revitalize these remote communities.

The goal of the Arctic Digital Nomads Grant is about creating lasting connections between digital nomads and local communities. With an emphasis on cultural exchange and integration, the initiative hopes to attract a diverse group of professionals, from artists to tech developers, who bring fresh perspectives and skills beyond the traditional sectors of fishing and farming. In recent years, Geiranger has seen a dwindling winter population as summer tourists vanish along with the season. The initiative, which targets the quiet winter months, seeks to enliven the village with “new faces” and unique talents, infusing energy back into this UNESCO World Heritage site.

Winter in Geiranger is worlds apart from its bustling summer, where tourists flock to experience its pristine fjords and mountain views. Once the last cruise ship departs, the village becomes the perfect quiet setting for remote work. Snow-covered landscapes, icy fjords, and the Northern Lights create a stunning backdrop that is as conducive to focused work as it is to creativity. This shift from the fast-paced urban lifestyle will appeal to digital nomads seeking a deeper connection with nature, an opportunity for reflection, and a more balanced rhythm to their days.

A Program with Purpose

The primary aim of the Arctic Digital Nomads Grant is not only to bring visitors but to create lasting connections between remote workers and local communities. This initiative envisions a two-way exchange where digital nomads, families, and creatives bring fresh ideas and skills to the village while immersing themselves in local culture. Beyond free accommodations and workspace, the program offers participants a chance to form lasting ties to these remote, picturesque locations—with the potential to even spark the desire for a more permanent relocation.

Spain is on the cusp of a new digital era. At the beginning of 2022, the country’s government announced plans to enact new legislation to encourage investment and attract foreign talent to its shores. While the so-called Start-Up Act is still being debated, with the final version not expected to reach fruition until the end of the year, the draft proposal includes a section on a digital nomad visa that would lower some of the barriers for people looking to work abroad on the Hispanic peninsula.
