Best House Sitting Websites for Digital Nomads: Costs and Responsibilities

Desk research updated October 30, 2026. The best house sitting website depends on where you want to travel, how often you plan to apply, the animals and home duties you can genuinely handle, and whether the membership cost makes sense before you have secured a sit.

House sitting is not free accommodation with no strings attached. It is an exchange in which a house sitter accepts responsibility for pets, a home and agreed routines. You still pay for transport, gaps between assignments, food, insurance, mobile data and sometimes utilities. A membership never guarantees selection.

How we compared house sitting platforms

We reviewed official pricing, terms, help and registration pages. The comparison prioritises six things that matter to digital nomads: total cost, location supply, ability to contact hosts, identity or reference tools, cancellation and support terms, and the practical fit between pet care and remote work.

Listing counts change constantly and a large global total says little about your exact month. Before paying, search the public inventory for your dates and region, note how many suitable listings appear, and check whether the platform lets an unpaid member see enough detail to judge the supply.

TrustedHousesitters: broad reach, highest price

TrustedHousesitters is the clearest choice when you want a large international search and expect to apply repeatedly. Its official US sitter pricing page showed Basic at US$129, Standard at US$169 and Premium at US$259 per year. All provide access to unlimited sits, while higher tiers add benefits such as vet advice, support, liability-related cover and, on Premium, a sit-cancellation plan and two airport-lounge passes.

The current pricing page says Basic and Standard include a per-sit booking fee while Premium does not. An official public explore page stated a £9 booking fee per confirmed sit for Basic and Standard members, but the checkout currency and amount can vary by market. Confirm the exact annual and per-sit price shown to your account before paying.

The value case improves if you complete several sits. It weakens if you need one competitive listing in a major city, have no references or cannot accommodate pet routines. The platform automatically renews annual memberships unless renewal is turned off. Cancellation-plan and liability benefits are conditional products, not a substitute for reading the full policy.

Nomador: flexible entry and clear plan ladder

Nomador is a useful international alternative when you want a three-month entry option or prefer its community and planning features. The official pricing page listed Discovery at €34 for three months or €89 for one year, Standard at €149 per year and Premium at €189 per year.

Discovery permits unlimited stays and applications. Standard adds support, profile help, home protection for hosts and cancellation cover up to €250 per stay, subject to terms. Premium adds priority support, boosting, early access to selected listings and cancellation cover up to €500 per stay. Nomador says subscriptions can be set not to renew, but an active term is not refunded pro rata.

This is not an instant-booking accommodation platform. Hosts choose among applicants, and Nomador explicitly says some members find a match quickly while others need more time. Treat the three-month plan as paid access to apply, not as a promise of a successful assignment.

HouseCarers: lower-cost worldwide directory

HouseCarers publishes a standard full house-sitter membership of US$50 per year. A free profile can receive opportunity emails, but paid membership is required to apply, read full messages, respond and display several profile uploads. Promotional registration pages may show a discount, so compare the checkout total with the standard list price.

The official guide states that the platform does not screen or interview registrants and that homeowners are responsible for checking identity, qualifications and references. That makes a careful video call, written agreement, reference checks and emergency plan especially important. HouseCarers also says some utility sharing may be negotiated for long assignments; get every cost in writing.

This service can be a rational budget option for flexible travellers who are comfortable doing more verification themselves. It is a weaker fit if you want a platform-run matching decision or assume every profile has passed the same background process.

House Sitters America: focused US coverage

House Sitters America charges sitters US$49 for twelve months and states that the membership does not automatically renew. Its focus is the United States, which can be useful if your plans are domestic or you want to concentrate applications instead of searching a global platform.

The site describes both paid and unpaid house-sitting arrangements. The price and duties for any paid service must be agreed with the owner, and immigration, tax and local business rules may apply. A US-only directory is not automatically easier: desirable city sits can still attract many applicants, and rural assignments may require a car.

What house sitting really costs

A platform price is only the first line of the budget. Consider three transparent scenarios:

  • One experimental sit: membership plus transport, a flexible hotel before and after, food, insurance and a backup fund. The effective cost per night can be high if you are not selected again.
  • Several sits in one region: one annual membership may spread across many nights, but gaps and repositioning travel still matter. Premium benefits only have value if their terms cover your actual problem.
  • Continuous house sitting: the lowest accommodation spend comes with the highest scheduling risk. One cancellation can create an expensive last-minute gap, so maintain cash and a cancellable backup.

Do not subtract a city’s full rent from your budget and call the difference savings. You are exchanging time and care, not receiving a no-obligation room. Flights, visas, local transport and missed work can easily outweigh the membership fee.

Pet care and home responsibilities

Read every listing as a job description. Daily duties may include feeding, medication, dog walks, litter care, garden watering, mail, rubbish, pool checks, security routines and cleaning. Ask for an ordinary weekday schedule, not only a summary such as “easy dog.”

Before accepting, discuss how long animals may be left alone, behaviour triggers, medication, vet authority, emergency spending, cameras, visitors, vehicle use, utilities, handover and the return time. Put the agreed details in writing. If a routine cannot coexist with your meetings or health needs, decline.

House sitting while you work remotely

A reliable internet connection must be verified, not assumed. Ask the homeowner for a recent speed test from the room where you will work, confirm upload speed and router location, and discuss outages. Keep mobile data as a backup where coverage allows.

Be upfront about your schedule on the first video call. A dog that cannot be left for two hours, a rural house with no delivery options or a pet needing frequent medication can make a normal workday impossible. Time-zone overlap also matters: overnight meetings may disturb pets or neighbours.

Screening, references and the perfect match myth

Verification badges, references and reviews reduce uncertainty but do not prove that a sit is suitable. Check the age and detail of references, ask what went wrong on a previous assignment, confirm everyone who will stay, and notice whether the owner’s expectations remain consistent across the listing, call and written agreement.

New sitters can build credibility with local assignments, external references and a complete profile. Apply only when your skills match the pets and duties. A personalised application is more useful than a generic promise to “love animals.”

Cancellation and support limits

Platform support does not remove travel risk. Read when a cancellation benefit starts, which members qualify, contribution amounts, nightly caps, total caps, evidence requirements and exclusions. TrustedHousesitters’ official help page, for example, says its Premium sitter cancellation plan can cover up to US$150 per night and US$1,500 per sit, subject to conditions and a US$150 contribution. Nomador publishes lower plan-specific caps.

Keep your own emergency accommodation fund even when a plan advertises cover. Reimbursement after a claim is different from having a room available tonight.

Never assume that an unpaid exchange is automatically tourism. Immigration authorities can look at the duties performed, local benefit and true purpose of travel. Australia’s Home Affairs department says a Visitor visa or ETA does not allow work, while the UK visitor rules prohibit paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person except for specific permitted activities. Neither page creates a blanket house-sitting answer.

Ask the destination’s immigration authority or consulate about your exact arrangement. Describe the pet care, accommodation exchange, duration and any payment honestly. A platform’s marketing copy is not immigration permission.

How to choose a house sitting website

  1. Search your actual destinations and dates before paying.
  2. Estimate the full year cost, including per-sit fees and currency conversion.
  3. Read who performs identity checks and who remains responsible for screening.
  4. Compare cancellation terms with your likely travel pattern.
  5. Check whether pet routines fit your remote-work hours.
  6. Keep a separate accommodation backup and insurance.
  7. Review entry and work rules for every country.

Alternatives to house sitting

If your workday is inflexible, a monthly rental, coliving space or home exchange may be safer. House sitting works best when care is part of the experience, not an obstacle to the trip. Compare the trade-offs with our monthly-rental websites guide and budget for gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make money from house sitting?

Some arrangements are paid, but the platforms compared here often centre on an exchange of care for accommodation. Paid work changes tax, insurance and immigration questions. Agree the terms in writing and comply with local rules.

Which site is best for a first-time house sitter?

Start with the platform that has suitable local listings you can realistically win. A lower-cost directory may limit upfront spend; a larger network may provide more opportunities but more competition.

Is house sitting free accommodation?

No. Even without rent, you accept duties and pay other costs. Selection is not guaranteed, and cancellations or gaps can require last-minute accommodation.

Can I work remotely during a sit?

Only when the pet schedule, internet and legal position fit. Verify all three before committing.
