Kazakhstan Digital Nomad Visa: Neo Nomad vs Residency Routes

Kazakhstan digital nomad visa: choose the right route

Research checked November 4, 2026. If you want to spend a longer period in Kazakhstan while working remotely for overseas income, start by checking the Neo Nomad visa, category B12-1. If you are an IT professional relocating toward permanent residence, investigate Digital Nomad visa B9-1. These are separate categories, despite the similar names used in travel articles.

This guide compares the official routes and turns the published requirements into an application checklist. It is desk research, not a report of a visa application we completed. Your nationality, residence and work arrangement determine which consulate and supporting evidence apply.

The Kazakh Embassy in the Netherlands explains both categories, including a possible multiple-entry paper B9-1 issued by Internal Affairs on the basis of the electronic visa. Do not substitute a B12-1 checklist for the IT route.

Neo Nomad visa requirements: income and necessary documents

The official Neo Nomad instructions describe overseas remote income, six months of bank statements, a tax return from the citizenship country, a criminal-record certificate from the citizenship or permanent-residence country, and medical insurance covering the requested visa period. Some applicants also need an invitation.

There is a wording discrepancy at the income threshold. The general instructions say at least US$3,000 per month, while the legal visa table and some consular checklists say over US$3,000. If your income is exactly at the threshold, do not assume you qualify. Ask your processing mission to confirm how it assesses the amount and currency conversion. The official legal text is the underlying reference.

  • Separate recurring income from transfers between your own accounts.
  • Ask how irregular freelance receipts, dividends or a recently changed employer should be evidenced.
  • Keep the bank statements and work documentation consistent with the explanation in your application.
  • If citizenship and tax residence differ, ask which tax document the mission will accept; do not silently replace the requested document.
  • Check document age, translation and legalization requirements before submitting certificates.

These are preparation questions, not additional requirements invented by this guide. The consulate decides whether your evidence is sufficient.

Nationality, invitations and where to apply

The general instructions describe eligibility across nationalities, with an invitation exemption for a listed group of countries. An invitation exemption is not the same as visa-free entry or automatic approval. Check your passport against the current mission list, then ask whether the mission accepts applications from residents of your current country.

For example, the London B12-1 page includes the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia among the invitation-exempt nationalities. It asks for an application form, photo and passport with two blank pages and validity extending three months beyond the requested visa. Those details belong to that published checklist; another mission may have different submission arrangements.

Visa fees and application costs

Processing mission examplePublished B12-1 feeWhat to confirm
London£170 for multiple entryAppointment, payment method and current checklist
TorontoUS$200 for multiple entryMoney-order instructions and eligibility to apply there

These are separate consular price examples checked on November 4, 2026, not a universal fee converted into two currencies. Toronto’s official instructions specify payment by money order and in-person submission. They also mention fingerprint registration for applicants aged 16 or older.

Build your own application budget from the fee plus any required certificate, translation, legalization, insurance and travel costs. A family should confirm charges for every applicant. Keep refundable accommodation until the application outcome is clear; visa fees and flight-change costs can make a premature booking expensive.

How to apply: a practical sequence

  1. Choose the category. Identify whether you want overseas remote work or the IT permanent-residence pathway.
  2. Contact the responsible mission. Confirm nationality, residence jurisdiction, invitation rules and the current document checklist.
  3. Resolve unusual income evidence. Ask about variable freelance income and the threshold wording before ordering documents.
  4. Prepare the file. Match names, passport details, insurance dates and requested stay dates across documents.
  5. Book and attend the required appointment. Follow that mission’s submission and payment instructions.
  6. Check the issued visa. Verify category, validity, entries and personal details before traveling.

London publishes an indicative processing time of about five business days after receipt of documents, requires personal submission and does not accept postal applications. Treat that as a mission-specific estimate rather than a guaranteed turnaround. Its published fee is non-refundable.

Family members and extensions

The official general instructions provide for spouses and dependents to receive visas for the main holder’s period. They describe a possible extension of B12-1 for up to one additional year through Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs. Neither statement means renewal or dependent approval is automatic.

Before traveling as a family, request a separate checklist for relationship documents, children’s passports, insurance and any consent requirements. Ask how an extension application affects travel plans and what deadline applies to your case. Do not plan a second year solely because the route permits an extension in principle.

Remote work, local employment and tax questions

The London guidance explicitly excludes employment in Kazakhstan under B12-1. A foreign employer paying you overseas does not, by itself, resolve every legal question about contracting, company operations or tax. Ask for professional advice if you will serve local clients, establish a business or remain for an extended period.

This article does not claim a tax holiday, exemption for worldwide income or a universal tax rate. The visa sources used here do not establish those outcomes for your circumstances. Keep immigration eligibility separate from tax residence, payroll and employer approval.

Insurance and planning your stay

Check that your policy covers Kazakhstan and the full required period. Compare medical limits, pre-existing-condition terms, work activities, evacuation, deductibles and renewability. Frequently asked questions

Does Kazakhstan have a digital nomad visa?

Yes, but choose the category by purpose. B12-1 supports foreign-income remote work, while B9-1 is the IT-focused route toward permanent residence. Using only the marketing name can lead you to the wrong documents.

Can an American apply?

The United States appears on London’s invitation-exemption list. That addresses an invitation requirement, not individual eligibility, consular jurisdiction or approval. Start with the Kazakh mission responsible for your location.

Is the Neo Nomad visa a permanent residence permit?

No. Do not present a temporary B12-1 stay as permanent residency. If settlement is the goal, investigate the relevant residence process rather than assuming that a second year of remote work converts automatically.
